All you need is a pair of headphones, and now you can fly across the country in your living room easy chair. How is this possible? DIRECTV makes it happen with in-flight television service that is now offered by several domestic carriers, including JetBlue, Frontier and Virgin America. There is no word yet from Richard Branson as to whether he plans to provide TV on flights to outer space. Services vary from airline to airline, so check with your carrier before purchasing tickets. Sometimes there is an additional charge for DIRECTV and sometimes it is included in the price of the flight. Following are some of the benefits of having DIRECTV while flying.
- Pass the Time – If you fly enough miles to pile up points, then the novelty of takeoffs and landings and whooshing through the clouds has probably worn off. Television can help “shorten” your commute.
- News – You may be a Brian Williams junkie. If that’s the case, then DIRECTV may serve as a way to feed the need for Mr. Williams or whatever network news feeds you follow.
- Privacy – Pop on the headphones and let DIRECTV rescue you from the guy next to you who wants to tell you about his entire medical history on the non-stop flight from Boston to San Francisco. You’ll be glad when you are somewhere over North Dakota not listening to your neighbor’s recollections of childhood bouts with measles and chicken pox.
- Short Seasons – If you follow any television series these days, you’ll notice that a “season” seems to consist of about four episodes. If you miss just one, you can lose track of your whole season. With DIRECTV in-flight, you can keep tabs on your favorites.
- Relaxation – Many people utilize television at home for the relaxation (nap?). Having access to television during a flight can serve the same purpose; a touch of home while hundreds or thousands of miles away.
- Nerves – Fear of flying may be eased when passengers have a distraction available, and DIRECTV can help by providing a soothing program array. It may be best to avoid screenings of Snakes on a Plane, however.
- Weather – The captain of the plane may brief you on the current weather at your destination, but DIRECTV offers The Weather Channel, which can help you plan ahead for for the upcoming week.
- Sports – If missing Monday Night Football or Thursday Night Football or All Day Saturday and Sunday Football or March Madness or . . . You get the picture. Sports fans are a happier bunch when they don’t miss their favorite matchups.
- Soaps – Continuity is a key for many people, and they don’t like it if they miss an episode of their regular afternoon soap operas. DIRECTV can make sure you don’t miss any of the action.
- Movies – There are usually quite a few movie selections on long flights which are equipped with DIRECTV, and there will be selections for both children and older viewers.
DIRECTV gives passengers many more viewing options than the old traditional single-movie menu, and frequent fliers won’t end up seeing the same movie ten times in a month. Passengers have been pleased with the little luxury, and kids are less prone to snivel and whine for 3,000 miles when Sponge Bob is there to comfort them.
