10 Reasons People Purchase Girl Scout Cookies

Girl Scouts of the United States of America is an organization that was created to provide girls with a chance to develop physically, mentally and spiritually. It was begun 100 years ago in Savannah, Georgia when Juliette Gordon Low assembled a group of 18 girls for a meeting. Today, Girl Scouts continue that mission, and one of the means they use to support that mission is the sale of their now-famous cookies. Let’s look at 10 reasons why they are such a popular purchase:

  1. Fund-raising Aid Many folks like to participate in the support that the cookie sales provide the Girl Scouts. They buy cookies to help the organization pay for its programs, supplies, services, personnel and all of their other operational expenses.
  2. Entrepreneurial Education When someone buys Girl Scout cookies, they are helping those girls to learn finance fundamentals, how to manage money and be responsible for a business. The cookie sales are the first opportunity that many girls have for taking on that sort of responsibility.
  3. They’re Unique Girl Scout cookies are unlike those you can buy in stores, so many people who love them keep coming back for more. It helps your cookie sales when you’re the only game in town for delicious treats like Samoas!
  4. Care Packages As a doubly thoughtful gesture, some people buy the cookies in order to send them to soldiers overseas. They’re supporting our military troops while at the same time supporting our Girl Scout troops.
  5. Recruitment Some folks buy them to help promote the Girl Scouts organization itself. Giving them to girls and their parents might just inspire them to join the scouts themselves.
  6. Sweet Tooth Some folks just can’t resist the opportunity to load up on sweets when they get the chance. And who can blame them, when a fresh-faced group of girls plead with them to help their cause, with boxes upon boxes of Tagalongs as enticement?
  7. Guilt We can’t dismiss the fact that many of us just feel obligated to help out. Some may not even have a taste for the cookies themselves, but they know what these sales mean to the girls, so they buy some for the cause.
  8. Peer Pressure There are those who buy the cookies through co-workers who are parents of scouts. Much like the guilt-ridden group above, they feel a sense of obligation when others in the workplace are cheerily placing orders.
  9. It’s Illegal (not to mention immoral) to Steal Them Faced with no other safe and legal means by which to procure these tasty snacks, some are simply resigned to the reality that they’ll need to cough up a few bucks to get their fix.
  10. They’re Just Plain Delicious! Sure, it’s for a good cause, you’re helping your neighbor’s kid and all that. The bottom line is: these cookies rock, and we’d buy them from a guy carrying them around inside a trench coat if we had to. Fortunately, though, we’ve got the Girl Scouts!
