Remember how fearless you were as a kid? You would do just about anything on a dare. Life lessons like failure, pain and embarrassment would come later. This was a time in your life when anything was possible and there were few consequences beyond a good scolding from your parents if and when you got caught. So what were some of the things you were willing to try when you were a kid? Here’s our list of 10 things kids will try that adults would chicken out of:
- Go Naked in Public – Ah, the simplicity and innocence of youth. Complete freedom from shame – not to mention cellulite, varicose veins, beer bellies …
- Eat a Booger – We’re not certain at what age came the realization that booger eating was socially unacceptable behavior; we’re just glad it came. It’s bad enough enduring a dinner date with someone who talks with their mouth full.
- Eat a Bug – Granted, there are cultures in which this is common, and there is evidence supporting its nutritional value; also it would be downright handy if you ever planned to be a contestant on Fear Factor. Regardless, we’re going to pass on the cricket pasta.
- Ask Embarrassing or Personal Questions – Most of us can remember an instance when a child posed a question to someone that every adult would dare only think. And we reveled in the vicarious opportunity, didn’t we?
- Climb a Tree – After all, isn’t that what they were there for? At least that’s what we believed as children. Treehouses would never have been possible otherwise.
- Jump From Heights – Brittle bones and emergency room visits never occurred to us as kids; so we jumped from those tree limbs, garage roofs and playground apparatus with fearless abandon. Now we sprain our ankles when we try to hop off the second rung of a step ladder.
- Talk to Strangers – For better or worse, adults must instill caution into children, to protect them from the potential hazards of their naturally trusting natures.
- Make New Friends – Kids just have this innate ability to blend into a group of their peers, which seems to become more of a challenge for us as we grow older. Fear of rejection, abandonment issues, or a reluctance to venture out of our comfort zone become obstacles to broadening our adult social circles.
- Cross Gender Lines – Before we program them to think otherwise, kids aren’t hung up about gender. Boys and girls will play with each other’s toys and interact with no fear of being labeled.
- Food Combinations – Don’t try telling the average kid that donuts in milk and corn chips with a glass of Coke isn’t a nutritious breakfast. They’ve got bellies of iron and are blissfully ignorant of calories and cholesterol. Ah, youth.
