I’ve lived most of my life without owning a cell phone, but now if I leave home without it, I’ll panic and go back to get it no matter how late I am. I also won’t let my husband leave my sight without his. He calls it his “shock collar”. How did this fairly new technology become such a necessity in my life?
- Emergencies – The first thing I think of when I forget my phone is, “What if there’s an emergency?” I always take my cell phone when I’m out walking, just in case. Nobody wants to be stranded somewhere with no way to call for help.
- Important calls – I always worry about missing that very important call if I don’t have my cell phone with me. What if someone in the family has some big news or I won ten million dollars in a sweepstakes?
- Take pictures – I don’t always think of bringing a camera, so my cell phone comes in handy when that unexpected photo-op happens. Nobody would have ever believed me if I hadn’t gotten a picture of that zebra in Montana.
- Check emails – My cell phone also makes sure I never miss an important email and I can respond right away. Those people who only check their email intermittently are so annoying. I don’t want to be the last one to get the latest email joke making the rounds.
- Internet access – Having my cell phone with me makes sure that I always have access to the internet. I can check the weather, search the web or find the nearest restaurant.
- Plans change – The best laid plans can change the instant you leave the house. If I’m meeting someone and they can’t make it, I want to know about it immediately.
- Running late – If I’m running late for an appointment I want to be able to call and let them know. What I don’t want to tell them is that I’m running late because I had to go back and get my cell phone.
- Forget things – I don’t want to forget my cell phone, because I’m always forgetting something else. It’s maddening to get to the grocery store and find that I’ve forgotten the list. Are we running low on coffee or should I just get some because it’s on sale?
- Get lost – If I get lost or can’t find the place I’m looking for, I want to be able to call for directions. It’s also a great way to find companions if you get separated in a large store or event. They could be just in the next isle or around the corner and you’d never know without your cell phone.
- Convenience – Truth be told, having my cell phone just makes life so much easier. I can make calls while I’m out walking or play a game if I’m bored. In fact, being without my phone is just so darn inconvenient now.
How did we ever survive without cell phones? Our lives must have been filled with constant frustration over missed calls, forgotten grocery lists, and rescheduled appointments while we drove around aimlessly every time we got lost. Well maybe it wasn’t quite that bad, but I know my life is much more pleasant knowing I have a constant link to friends, family and the rest of the world with my cell phone. Heaven forbid I get in an area with no signal!
