The college party is one of the most quintessential parties of all time. Although there are no hard and fast rules to pull this one off, you’re going to need time to prepare, steady nerves and level head to control your guests and plenty of time to clean up the destruction ex post! Time/Date: Planning out your party beforehand is especially important with a keg. For instance, keg parties are the most fun when all of your friends are able to make it. Therefore, you’ve got to pick the right time and date. In our experience, Saturdays tend to be better than Fridays as people aren’t tired from the workday and have had a chance to sleep in. For picking the actual date, use the tools you have at hand, e.g., post the event in Facebook and see who can make it, or, better yet, set up a poll on doodle.com and have your friends plug in the dates that work for them. The Guest List: With a college keg party, you’re going to need tight control of the guest list–a kegger can easily get out of control. Make sure to inform your guests about how many friends they’re allowed to bring along. If 300 people show up, you’re going to get shut down in a hurry. Neighbours’/Permitting: Keg parties are loud and rambunctious. Be polite and inform your neighbours about your plans. Also, make sure to exchange phone numbers with them in case things do get too loud for their comfort level. A quick phone call to the host to turn the music down is much more pleasant for both parties than calling the police! Unless you’re having a block party style keg party, permitting should not be an issue. Drinks: This category is easy for a keg party: beer! You’ll usually need at least one or two full-sized kegs. Each keg hold around 100 dixie cups of beer; estimate off that number. In addition to beer, tequila or vodka for shots always go over well. Finally, make sure you’ve got a functioning water source for people to re-hydrate! In order to keep your beer kegs cold, you’re also going to need lots of ice and some large buckets or trash cans to keep the kegs in. Pour a little bit of ice to coat the bottom of the container, then lift in the keg. Pack the remaining ice around the keg. Finally, give the whole thing a healthy dose of water to speed up the cooling process! Food: You always need to offer a little food at a party, especially to keep people from leaving or getting too drunk. With a keg party, go for easy finger foods like pre-made cheese platters, chips, pretzels, etc. A keg party is not a culinary experience… Payment: Those kegs are going to cost you at least $30-$40 a piece–not cheap for the average college student. It’s common to charge a couple dollars at the door to receive a cup and try to recoup your cost. However, don’t go overboard and try to make a lot of profit on the party–that news travels quickly. Crowd Control: As previously mentioned, keg parties can easily get out of control. It’s essential to have a couple people with clear heads to try and break up fights, kick people out who are underage or way too drunk and maintain a friendly atmosphere. Plus, these people make great early-warning systems for the police if they do eventually come knocking. Attire: Come as you are. Seriously, there is no such thing a classy keg party. Chances are, whatever you’re wearing will be soaked in beer by the end of the night–dress appropriately. Music: Music for keg parties should be a good mix of driving rock, hip hop, pop or dance. Since your audience will be very diverse, it’s also a good idea to stick to more mainstream tunes that most people know. The following songs would be great examples to keep the place jumping!
